Emtee Reflects On His Time In Jail. Emtee has opened up about his recent stint behind bars, revealing that the experience ultimately gave him a different perspective on life.
Speaking during an interview on Real Stuff Podcast with Da L.E.S and Maggz, the Roll Up hitmaker reflected on his time in custody in comments that have since circulated among fans, saying he is now grateful for the setback because it helped him leave behind some of the habits he had been caught up in.
“The only thing that I wanted was to be treated normally. You mean like outside, yeah, might be Emtee, and all that, but, you know, when we’re in there, like, I’m also, like, focused on what I’m going through. For me, that was like a learning curve that these are human beings too,” he said.
The rapper also stated that in the midst of everything he was going through, he is also grateful because the whole experience gave him a fresh perspective on everything.
“It’s crazy now I say it today, I’m grateful for that setback because now I come out of that little bit I was doing with a fresh mindset,” Emtee said.
The rapper spent 16 days at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre before being released on R2,000 bail on 2 September 2026. His release followed the withdrawal of a case involving his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy, over an alleged breach of a 2023 protection order that prohibited him from contacting or posting about her on social media.
Emtee’s father, Lumkile Ndevu, previously described the period as an “eye-opener” for his son and said he hoped the experience would lead to important lessons. Emtee’s latest reflection appears to point in a similar direction as he looks at the difficult chapter through the lens of personal growth.
The rapper has faced considerable public scrutiny in recent years while working through personal challenges and changes in his career. He has also spoken publicly about sobriety and personal growth.
Earlier in 2026, Emtee cut off his signature dreadlocks, a move that was widely viewed as part of a period of change for the rapper. His latest comments suggest that the idea of starting over has extended beyond his appearance.
Following his release, Emtee quickly returned his attention to music. He performed at the Cape Town Kota Festival days later, where he shared the stage with Big Zulu, while continuing to work towards completing his long-awaited project.
