Eric Chelle reveals why Nigeria didn’t qualify for the 2026 World Cup

Eric Chelle in his latest interview has opened up on why Nigeria failed to secure a ticket and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained why Nigeria failed to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that dropped points against Zimbabwe proved decisive in the country’s unsuccessful qualification campaign.

Speaking in a recent interview with Algerian journalist Riadh Belaïche, Chelle revealed that the Super Eagles were already in a difficult position when he took charge, having collected just three points from their opening four qualifying matches.

When I arrived, Nigeria had three points from 12. We fought hard to reach the playoffs, but those two dropped points against Zimbabwe hurt us a lot. It was in our hands to qualify for the World Cup but we didn’t,” Chelle said.

The Franco-Malian coach acknowledged that despite the team’s efforts to revive their campaign, failing to convert key matches into victories ultimately cost Nigeria a place at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes suffered a major setback after being held to a draw by Zimbabwe, a result that left the Super Eagles with too much ground to make up in the remaining fixtures.

Chelle’s comments offer an honest assessment of the campaign, highlighting how missed opportunities rather than a lack of quality ultimately denied the three-time African champions a place at football’s biggest tournament.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to rebuilding under Chelle as they prepare for upcoming international competitions, with the aim of returning to winning ways after the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 World Cup.
