Former prop and Lions assistant coach Julian Redelinghuys on whether the “red mist” cost the Springboks dearly in the first Test of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.
Trailing midway through the second half of last week’s 33-16 defeat at Ellis Park, South Africa won three successive 5m scrum penalties that had the All Blacks pinned five metres from their own tryline.
The Boks were poised to turn their set-piece dominance into points and opted for another scrum, but a delay while Eben Etzebeth changed his boots stalled their momentum.
This time the penalty went New Zealand’s way, allowing the visitors to escape their own 22, gain field position and wrestle control of the contest from the hosts.
