Expanding Access to Secondary Education in Uganda
For many young people in Uganda, financial hardship and social pressures can create significant barriers to completing secondary education. These challenges disproportionately affect vulnerable students, particularly girls at risk of early and forced marriage, limiting opportunities for future learning and economic participation.
To help address these barriers, Asante Africa Foundation partnered with Nyakasura School in 2021 to increase access to quality secondary education for vulnerable youth in Tooro Region. The partnership began with a shared commitment to support a young girl who was at risk of dropping out of school due to early and forced marriage. Since then, three scholars have received support through the program, enabling them to continue their education in safe and supportive learning environments.
Supporting Educational Access and Leadership Development
Nyakasura School contributed 30 percent of tuition costs for each scholar, while Asante Africa Foundation identified eligible students, covered the remaining school fees, provided personal effects and offered mentorship and ongoing academic support.
Scholarship recipients were selected based on academic performance, financial need, discipline and demonstrated commitment to their education. In addition to reducing financial barriers, the partnership created opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and pursue higher education pathways.
Two scholarship recipients completed their secondary education in 2024 and transitioned to higher education. Marion is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Physics and Mathematics) at Bishop Stuart University, while Gerald is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Kampala University.
The partnership also fostered student leadership. Rosette, the first scholar supported through the program, established a Pay-it-Forward Club at Nyakasura School, creating opportunities for fellow students to strengthen leadership and entrepreneurship skills. Through this initiative, more than 60 students participate annually in the Youth Livelihood Program.
A Shared Commitment to Youth Empowerment
By addressing barriers associated with poverty and early marriage, the partnership has strengthened Asante Africa Foundation’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for vulnerable youth while advancing gender equality, leadership development and long-term economic opportunity.
Looking Ahead
Asante Africa Foundation and Nyakasura School remain committed to sustaining the scholarship program and expanding opportunities for vulnerable students to complete secondary education, transition to higher learning and develop the skills needed to contribute positively to their communities.
