Faf threat has Boland on red alert

The Boland Cavaliers have been sharpening up their defence in a bid to contain the threat posed by Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk ahead of their clash with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Fullback James Tedder believes the Cheetahs are a different proposition from the side Boland have beaten twice in their last two meetings, with De Klerk’s arrival adding another dimension to their attack.

“I think the Cheetahs are now a different team from when we beat them,” Tedder told Netwerk24.

“They’ve brought in a few good players and Faf is now with them. The Cheetahs like to play running rugby and Faf controls the game.

“We’ll have to be on our game defensively to stop their running rugby.”

The Cavaliers have already beaten the Cheetahs twice in recent meetings, including a 34-24 victory in Bloemfontein in the SA Cup earlier this year and a narrow 37-35 Currie Cup win in Wellington last season.

But Tedder insists those results will count for little on Sunday.

The Cavaliers currently sit fourth on the Currie Cup log, with just one point separating them from the Pumas in third and four points between them and the Cheetahs and Griquas, who are level on 21 points.

With only two league matches remaining, the stakes are high.

“It won’t do to beat the Lions in Johannesburg but then not qualify for the semi-finals,” Tedder said.

“Our goal is to make it to the final and win the Currie Cup. So it doesn’t help to celebrate big wins if you don’t achieve your end goal.”
