According to fresh reports, FIFA and CAF have halted the elections of the Nigerian Football Federation following the resignation of Gusau.
FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have reportedly directed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to suspend its ongoing electoral process pending a review of the leadership crisis affecting the country’s football administration.
According to a report by Leadership, the directive was communicated in a letter dated September 7, 2026, signed by FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov and addressed to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme.
The reported intervention follows notifications concerning the resignation of the NFF President, members of the Executive Committee and the General Secretary. FIFA and CAF are said to be examining the legal, administrative, governance and electoral consequences of the developments.
The governing bodies reportedly instructed the NFF not to take further action concerning the electoral process until additional notice is given. The measure is intended to maintain the existing situation while the assessment is carried out.
The report also stated that FIFA and CAF have yet to reach a conclusion on the matters under consideration or determine what steps, if any, should follow.
Ikpeme has reportedly been designated as the principal contact between the NFF and the two international football bodies during the review.
The development comes after a meeting reportedly held at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich on September 1, involving representatives of FIFA, CAF, the NFF administration and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
As part of the process, FIFA and CAF are said to be planning a joint assessment visit to Abuja. The proposed mission would include discussions with NFF officials, federation members, electoral bodies and government representatives, including the National Sports Commission.
The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to establish the facts, obtain the views of relevant stakeholders and assess whether any issues require further consideration under applicable football statutes and regulations.
Following the assessment, the governing bodies would reportedly determine whether recommendations should be presented to their respective decision-making organs.
The report further indicated that stakeholders have been cautioned against speculating about possible sanctions, as no final decision has been reached.
If confirmed, the directive would place the NFF electoral timetable on hold while FIFA and CAF examine the circumstances surrounding the federation’s leadership situation.
