Former Stormers boss lands Ikeys gig

Former Stormers head coach and ex-Springbok Robbie Fleck will reportedly take charge of the UCT Ikeys in the Varsity Cup from next season.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Fleck, who previously served as an assistant under Tom Dawson-Squibb, takes over following the latter’s departure at the end of April.

Dawson-Squibb led the Ikeys from 2019, guiding them to three Varsity Cup finals (2021, 2023, 2024) and a semi-final (2022).

It is understood that former Scotland international Josh Strauss and defence specialist Craig Childs will continue as assistant coaches.

Fleck’s familiarity with the team’s structures, having served as the attack coach, and his extensive coaching experience, are expected to bring stability to the team.

His first big assignment after hanging up his boots was as assistant coach to John Dobson at UCT in the first season of the Varsity Cup in 2008. At the end of 2009 Fleck formally became part of the Western Province coaching structure.

As backline coach under Allister Coetzee, Fleck formed part of the team that played in successive home playoffs and the final in 2010 and won the Currie Cup in 2012 and 2014. He also won a national championship as head coach of WP U21 in 2015.

In 2016 Fleck was appointed as head coach of the Stormers and finished third on the combined log before their home quarter-final against the Chiefs. His team won the South African Conference trophy and did so again the following year.
