Stade Français midfielder Jeremy Ward is set to be a surprise inclusion in France’s 42-man squad for next month’s Nations Championship.
According to L’Équipe, France coach Fabien Galthié has decided to call up the 30-year-old South African.
Ward, however, will only be eligible to represent Les Bleus next year after completing the five-year residency period required by World Rugby. He will therefore join the squad as a “training partner” and won’t feature against Fiji (7 November), the Springboks (13 November) and Argentina (21 November).
Ward represented Eastern Province, the Southern Kings and Sharks before joining Stade Français in 2022. He also made four appearances for the Junior Springboks in 2016.
L’Équipe reports that Ward’s inclusion could come at the expense of Bordeaux Bègles centre Nicolas Depoortere, who has earned 10 Test caps for France.
