When Leinster and the Vodacom Bulls collide at Croke Park, the result may ultimately come down to these key head-to-head contests, writes MORNÉ ESBEN.
Handré Pollard vs Sam Prendergast
Big finals are often decided by the men wearing No 10, and Friday night’s showdown is no different. Pollard brings a wealth of experience, composure and game management to the Bulls, having built a career on thriving under pressure. Despite having a rare off-day in the semi-final against the Glasgow Warriors, Pollard’s been metronomical from the kicking tee this season, so expect him to rediscover his form. Across the field, Prendergast represents the future of Irish rugby. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the Leinster pivot, but he has shown throughout the season that he possesses the confidence and skill to steer the hosts’ attack. If Pollard can control territory and dictate the tempo, the Bulls will fancy their chances. If Prendergast is allowed to play on the front foot, Leinster’s dangerous backline could flourish.
HANDRÉ: Bulls must control emotion
James Lowe vs Kurt-Lee Arendse
One is a world-class destructive finisher, while the other is very clearly in the twilight of his career. Few players can turn a match as quickly as Arendse, and the Bulls will look to get the ball to him often to spark an attack. Even though he’s down on pace, Lowe still possesses a booming left boot and the ability to create something out of nothing – qualities which have made him one of Leinster’s most influential players over the years.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Farewell to a Leinster legend
Joe McCarthy vs Ruan Nortjé
This battle could have a major influence on the set-piece and physical exchanges. McCarthy has become one of Leinster’s enforcers, bringing aggression and intensity to the tight exchanges. Nortjé, meanwhile, continues to set the standard for the Bulls with his relentless work rate, leadership and lineout expertise. Neither player is known for taking a backward step, and whichever lock imposes himself physically could provide his side with a crucial platform.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The captain who’s given everything
Caelan Doris vs Cameron Hanekom
The clash at the back of the scrum pits one of Ireland’s established stars against one of South Africa’s most exciting young forwards. Doris is the heartbeat of the Leinster pack, offering a complete skill set that combines power, mobility and rugby intelligence. Hanekom has enjoyed a remarkable return from injury and has been instrumental in the Bulls’ resurgence this season. Both players excel in the loose and possess the ability to produce game-changing moments. Their duel promises to be one of the highlights of the evening.

Leinster scrum vs Bulls scrum
The most important battle may involve a group of individuals. Leinster’s scrum has been a cornerstone of their success this season, providing a reliable platform from which to launch attacks and build pressure. They’ve won 90% of their scrums across the URC. The Bulls, however, pride themselves on forward dominance and have repeatedly used their set-piece to wear opponents down. Johan Ackermann’s side boasts an even more impressive 96% scrum success rate, which gives them the pre-match advantage. If the Bulls gain ascendancy, they can control territory and tempo. If Leinster hold firm or gain parity, they will give their dangerous backs the freedom to attack. In a final where margins are likely to be small, the scrum battle could ultimately decide who lifts the trophy.
