When Leinster needed inspiration in their Vodacom URC semi-final against the Stormers, it came from the player many regard as the most influential in Irish rugby.
New Zealand-born scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park once again demonstrated why he remains the heartbeat of both Leinster and Ireland, producing a masterclass in game management before sealing a 20-11 victory with the decisive late try.
The match-up between Gibson-Park and Embrose Papier, who was named as the South African Vodacom URC Player of the Season, is set to be one of the highlights when defending champions Leinster face the Bulls in Friday night’s URC final.
While Leinster repeatedly attempted to batter their way through a gallant Stormers defence, Gibson-Park saw a different path to victory.
The veteran scrumhalf constantly probed around the fringes and his late dart through the heart of the Stormers defence to score under the posts killed off a contest which had been in the balance up until that moment.

But Gibson-Park’s influence extended far beyond the match-winning score.
The 34-year-old controlled territory with a succession of accurate box kicks and long-range clearances, while his ability to inject tempo into Leinster’s attack put them on the front foot.
“He’s so opportunistic,” Leinster coach Leo Cullen said after the match. “That [try] moment sums it up. He’s brilliant in how he sees things unfolding.
“But how he exits our 22 with his kicks is the big thing. In these big games, that’s hugely important in terms of applying pressure on the opposition and relieving pressure on ourselves.”
