Friday Night Lights: Rieko’s last chance for redemption

After an underwhelming Leinster stint, it’s time for Rieko Ioane to step up and deliver in Friday night’s Vodacom URC final at Croke Park.

Leinster recruited the All Blacks back for the 2025-26 season as a replacement for Jordie Barrett and comparisons were inevitable.

It was an unenviable position for the 29-year-old Ioane.

Barrett’s six-month stint in Dublin the previous season had been a resounding success. The All Blacks midfielder was instrumental in Leinster’s URC triumph, scoring a try against the Vodacom Bulls in the Croke Park final.

Although Leinster suffered a shock Investec Champions Cup semi-final defeat to the Northampton Saints, many pointed to head coach Leo Cullen’s decision to play his New Zealand ace off the bench as a costly error.

Ioane arrived in Dublin with big boots to fill and it has been a struggle.

The 88-Test All Black endured a slow start, splitting his time between centre and wing without ever fully establishing himself in either role. His form fluctuated and many critics questioned whether he could provide the same influence Barrett had delivered.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Five battles that will decide URC final

Yet as the season progressed, signs of the real Ioane have begun to emerge.

His physicality, defensive work and ability to win collisions became increasingly valuable during Leinster’s run to the Champions Cup final.

While the Irish province ultimately fell short against Bordeaux Bègles, Ioane’s performances in the closing weeks suggested a player finally settling into his surroundings.

But can Ioane complete his redemption journey in the eyes of Leinster supporters by emulating his compatriot and leading the Irish team to URC glory again?
