The former head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has explained how it was easy for his new team, Benin Republic to beat Nigeria.
Gernot Rohr was speaking in a post-match interview after his Benin Republic side beat Nigeria 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying game. According to him, the mentality of his players was masterclass despite when they conceded the first goal.
He said,
“They scored the first goal, perhaps, they believe it was already done but the reaction, the desire of my team was so strong.”
The Cheetahs of Benin came from a goal down to beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 on Monday, June 10, 2024. This is the first time they will get a victory over Nigeria in football history and also the first time they will secure two consecutive wins in 10 years following victories over Rwanda and Nigeria.
This result puts the Benin Republic top of Group C with seven points while Nigeria remain in fifth place with just three points.
