Glasgow land knockout blow on Stormers

Glasgow Warriors scored two tries in the final five minutes to claim a hard-fought Vodacom URC quarter-final victory over the DHL Stormers on Saturday.

A try from South African No 8 Henco Venter decided a 27-10 victory for Glasgow Warriors, who led by just six points at the break in a match that was tightly contested until the last five minutes.

Defeat for the DHL Stormers crushed their hopes of winning their first Vodacom URC playoff on the road, having played all of their previous playoffs in Cape Town.

John Dobson’s side started the game brightly, with Hacjivah Dayimani winning a couple of early breakdown turnovers, but couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities in the first half as Manie Libbok missed two penalty attempts kicking against the wind.

A controversial moment in the first half saw Glasgow captain Kyle Steyn escape further punishment after catching Warrick Gelant’s neck in an aerial duel.

Despite playing against the wind in the first half, the Stormers did excellently on defence to keep out a deadly Glasgow attack, with the hosts only able to get on the board through two penalties from scrumhalf George Horne.

The Stormers suffered a big blow early in the second half when captain Salmaan Moerat was controversially yellow carded for what referee Chris Busby adjudged as a dangerous clean out.

Somewhat ironically, the Stormers played some of their best attacking rugby when they were down a man, as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu capped an excellent individual performance with a sensational offload to put Ben Loader over the tryline.

Gasgow capitalised on the Stormers’ error from the subsequent kick-off, with Argentinian winger Sebastian Cancelliere scoring for the hosts, but the visitors kept themselves in the contest when Paul de Wet sniped over from a metre out.

In the end, the Stormers’ poor discipline and error rate let them down in the final 10 minutes, with former Sharks No 8 Venter reaching over to all but seal the result with fewer than five minutes on the clock, before Ross Thompson pounced on a loose ball to score in the final play.
