Former Bulls and Springbok flyhalf Derick Hougaard has shared a fundraising campaign after revealing he is facing financial difficulties.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the 42-year-old, who posted a link to the fundraiser on his Facebook page.
The campaign, titled “Together for Derick”, was started by Springbok supporter Lizelle Gers, who said the money raised will go towards rent, food and monthly bills.
“He has recently reached out for help, and I believe this is our opportunity to stand behind someone who once gave so much to South African rugby,” the campaign states.
“If each of us contributes just a little, together we can make a meaningful difference. No donation is too small.
“Whether you’re in South Africa or anywhere else in the world, let’s show Derick that he is not alone and that the rugby community and South Africans never forget those who have proudly represented us.
“Every donation – big or small – makes a difference. If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this fundraiser with your family and friends is another powerful way to help.”
A fundraising target of A$28,000 (around R325,000) has been set. By Thursday, $A225 (around R2,600) had been donated.
Hougaard retired from professional rugby in 2015 after a career that included spells with the Bulls, Leicester Tigers, Saracens and Springboks.
In 2023, he spent several weeks in a coma after contracting respiratory pneumonia.
