Former Springbok coach Harry Viljoen reckons South Africa cannot afford to underestimate Les Kiss’ Wallabies when the two sides meet in Perth on Sunday.
Viljoen, who handed Kiss his first rugby job as Bok defence coach in 2000, says the Australian’s rugby league background and tactical nous make him a serious threat.
“He’s very smart and the right character to turn the Wallabies around – if he has the personnel,” Viljoen was quoted by Rapport.
Kiss arrived in South African rugby on ex-Australia boss Bob Dwyer’s recommendation. Viljoen recalled facing scepticism over appointing him, but says Kiss won people over through his work ethic and expertise.

“There was a lot of criticism, but Les lives for the sport. I always knew he would rise to the top.”
Since replacing Joe Schmidt in July, Kiss has guided Australia to two wins against Japan and a win and a draw against Argentina.
He has also coached the Waratahs, Ireland, and a stint as Ulster’s director of rugby, where he worked alongside Rassie Erasmus.
