Heyneke: Rudolph deserves Bok chance

Heyneke Meyer believes Bulls loose forward Jeandré Rudolph should be selected for the Springboks’ tour of Europe in November.

The 32-year-old has been a consistent performer since returning to the Bulls from the Cheetahs, and again impressed off the bench in Saturday’s 56-20 Investec Champions Cup win against Stade Français at Loftus.

Rudolph scored a memorable try after chipping over Stade Français wing Aisake Nawaqadrua, kicking ahead again and regathering the ball to score.

Speaking to Rapport, Meyer named Rudolph among the players he thinks should be considered for the Springboks’ upcoming Nations Championship campaign, which includes matches against Italy in Turin (7 November), France in Paris (13 November) and Ireland in Dublin (21 November).

“I think Jeandré is playing brilliant rugby at the moment. His technique at the breakdown is of the highest quality,” said the former Springbok coach, who guided the SWD Eagles to the Currie Cup First Division title this year.

“He can play six, seven and eight, but for me his greatest value is that he is an out-and-out specialist openside flank who is incredibly good over the ball.

“His ability to steal balls and win turnovers puts him among the very best in the business.”

Meyer acknowledged the fierce competition for places in the Springbok loose-forward department.

“What makes Rudolph special, however, is his work on the ground, his good ball-carrying ability and his versatility,” said Meyer.

“He is no longer one of the youngest players, but his current form is excellent. I believe he definitely deserves an opportunity to prove himself at a higher level.

“Especially with the World Cup approaching, it is important to develop enough depth in case one of our established loose forwards gets injured.”
