Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has revealed how veteran utility forward Deon Fourie became ‘Brannas’.
The soon-to-be-40-year-old Fourie has been named on the bench for Saturday’s second Test against the All Blacks in Cape Town and is set to make his first appearance in the green and gold since the 2023 World Cup final.
On that occasion, Fourie was thrust into the action as a replacement hooker in just the third minute after Bongi Mbonambi was injured.

Fourie and Erasmus’ association, though, stretches back many years.
“I actually gave him the nickname ‘Brannas’ because we flew together on a flight when I was becoming the Stormers director of coaching and they [Western Province] were winning the U21 competition against us when I was still at Free State,” Erasmus recalled.
“He walked onto the plane and he was pouring Klipdrift [brandy] and Coke – that’s how he got the name ‘Brannas.’
“So I know him very, very well.”
