ICYMI: Apple Music Announces Buzzi Lee As The Latest Up Next Artist In South Africa. Apple Music has named Pretoria-born rapper and performer Buzzi Lee as the latest South African artist to join its Up Next artist development programme, putting the spotlight on one of the country’s distinctive voices in hip-hop.
Born Bontle Makhwelo, Buzzi Lee has steadily carved out her place in the local music scene with her sharp lyricism, township-inspired slang, punchy vocals and versatile flow. Blending raw rap delivery with melodic elements, she brings an authentic perspective to her music, drawing inspiration from her community while establishing a sound and identity of her own.
Her growing reputation has been strengthened by collaborations with some of South Africa’s established and emerging hip-hop names. These include the star-studded track ‘Sho Boy’, alongside Riky Rick, Junior Taurus, Yanga Chief, Beast RSA, Focalistic, Blxckie and 25K. She has also made notable contributions to ‘Zonke (Remix)’ and ‘Mugwanti’.
Beyond her recorded music, Buzzi Lee has taken her talent to some of the country’s biggest platforms and stages, including the South African Music Awards, BET Hip Hop Cyphers, Back to the City Festival and Maftown Heights. She also headlined the Big Brother Mzansi Season 4 finale, giving her music exposure to audiences across the continent.
Her Apple Music Up Next recognition arrives as she prepares to usher in a new chapter with her upcoming album, Bontle. The project promises to offer a more personal look into her artistic journey, showcasing the music she has been working on and the stories she is ready to share. ‘Abracadabra’ serves as the album’s first single.
Speaking about the recognition, Buzzi Lee described the opportunity as a meaningful milestone in her career, reflecting on the years she has spent developing her voice and finding the best ways to tell her story.
“Being the Up Next SA artist on Apple Music feels like a beautiful confirmation that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be,” she tells Apple Music. “I’ve spent years telling my story and figuring out what I want to say and how I want to share it with the world. This recognition means a lot to me, and I’m excited for people to discover what I’ve been creating.”
As part of the programme, Buzzi Lee will receive a feature on Apple Music’s global Up Next playlist, which highlights a handpicked selection of emerging artists from different genres and parts of the world. The playlist is curated by Apple Music editors, who select rising talent they believe deserves a wider audience.
The programme has previously spotlighted several artists who have gone on to achieve international recognition, including 6LACK, Daniel Caesar, H.E.R., Khalid, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Claudio, Mr Eazi, Bad Bunny, Juice WRLD, Megan Thee Stallion, Burna Boy, Rema, Don Toliver, Givēon, beabadoobee, Arlo Parks, Tate McRae and Tems.
With the Apple Music platform now behind her, Buzzi Lee joins a growing list of artists receiving international exposure through Up Next, marking another significant milestone in her journey as she prepares to introduce Bontle to the world.
