iFani Opens Up About Career Milestones He Wishes His Late Grandmother Could Have Witnessed. iFani has reflected on his late grandmother Mamtembu’s influence on his life, revealing that he wishes she could have witnessed the beginning of his journey in entertainment.
For iFani, Mamtembu had always believed he was destined for success. She knew him as a clever young man and expected him to pursue a conventional professional path, possibly as an engineer, through his academic achievements.
“Because Mamtembu always knew me as a clever guy. A guy who was always going to be successful in terms of working, some engineer, school stuff,” iFani said.
That belief was evident when he graduated. iFani recalled that his grandmother wanted to throw him a graduation party, but he declined. At the time, however, he was already thinking about a different kind of celebration and the possibilities that music could bring.
“When I graduated, she wanted to throw a graduation party for me,” he recalled. “And then I was like, ‘No, Mamtembu, I can’t, I can’t.’ But at the back of my mind I was thinking, some awards, Metro Awards, you know, another way of celebration.”
Looking back, iFani believes the moments that would have shown Mamtembu that he had succeeded in entertainment were his major award nominations.
“The nominations, the four nominations from the Metro Awards, and then the four more nominations from the SAMA Awards,” he said.
His connection to Mamtembu has also been immortalised in his music. iFani previously dedicated the song “Ingoma Ezimnandi” to his late grandmother, turning his memories of her and their relationship into a musical tribute. The song has been described in previous coverage as an ode to his grandmother.
The tribute adds another layer to iFani’s reflection on the milestones Mamtembu never got to witness. While she had imagined success for him through academics and a conventional career, his journey ultimately took him into music, where the Metro and SAMA nominations became important markers of his progress.
