K.O Highlights The Financial Reality Artists Face Behind Sold-Out Shows. K.O has shed light on the financial realities of the music industry, reminding artists and fans that a packed venue does not necessarily translate into money in the bank.

The Skhanda World founder shared the insight in a social media post titled “15 Things Nobody Tells You About Working in the Music Industry.” Among the lessons was a blunt reminder: “A sold-out show doesn’t mean the artist made money.” Accompanied by a sad-face emoji and a broken heart, the message highlighted a side of the industry that often goes unnoticed by audiences.

As one of South Africa’s established hip-hop artists, K.O., whose real name is Ntokozo Mdluli, has spent years building his career as a rapper, entrepreneur and label owner. From his time with Teargas to his solo success with projects such as Skhanda Republic and the hit single “Sete,” he has experienced different sides of the music business.
His observation highlights the difference between a successful show and a profitable one. While a sold-out venue signals strong ticket demand, the revenue generated must often cover several expenses before an artist can take home a share of the earnings.
Venue hire, stage production, sound equipment, security, staff, travel, marketing and promoter fees can all affect the final amount. Depending on the event’s financial arrangements, an artist may receive only a portion of the revenue, even when every ticket has been sold.
The distinction between gross revenue and net profit is particularly important for independent artists who must cover many of their own operating costs. A show may attract a large audience and generate substantial ticket sales without delivering the financial return that fans might expect.
K.O’s post also reflects the business knowledge artists need to build sustainable careers beyond releasing music and performing live. Through ventures such as Cashtime Life and Skhanda World, the rapper has been involved in the business side of the industry, where financial planning and understanding the terms of a deal can be just as important as attracting an audience.
