During an interview with SA Hip Hop Mag, the rapper was asked to name his top 10 favourite South African rappers of all time. Rather than immediately reaching for the biggest names of the current generation, Kid X went back to the foundations.

“In no particular order,” he began, before naming Skwatta Kamp and Teargas among his favourites. He also singled out Zubs, Proverb, ProKid, Stogie T and HHP, describing the names as “foundational” to his appreciation of South African hip-hop.

As he worked through the list, Kid X acknowledged that his choices were becoming heavily weighted towards the old school.

“It’s looking all OG,” he joked, making it clear that the rappers he was selecting were artists whose work had left a lasting impression on him.

The rapper also named Morafe among the artists he admired, praising the impact of the veteran emcee before briefly considering whether to bring more new-generation names into the conversation.

That is where the list became a little more difficult.

Kid X initially considered adding another name from the current generation, eventually mentioning the late AKA, before deciding to leave the list at nine.

The hesitation reflected just how strongly his selections were rooted in the generation that came before him. For Kid X, the list was less about creating a definitive ranking and more about recognising the rappers whose work he studied and respected.

“That’s from a rapper perspective,” he explained. “These are the guys that I look up to.”

He went on to explain that his choices were particularly influenced by their writing ability and the standards they established before he entered the scene.

“From a pen perspective, these are the guys that, yeah, I really studied a lot of their work,” Kid X said.

There was also a clear thread connecting his selections. According to the rapper, every artist he named had entered the game before him, making their careers part of the blueprint he encountered when developing his own identity as an emcee.

“In fact, all of those guys came in before me,” he noted.

For Kid X, that history matters. Rather than simply celebrating artists for their popularity, his list highlights the rappers whose lyricism, longevity and contribution to South African hip-hop gave him something to measure himself against.

“These are the people who I look at and say, yo, okay, that’s the standard,” he said.

While Kid X may have stopped short of completing a conventional top 10, his nine-name selection says plenty about the influences behind his own pen. It is a salute to the OGs whose work helped define the standard before he stepped up to the mic.
