Kid X On Why He Doesn’t Listen To SA Hip Hop. Kid X has offered an unexpected insight into his music-listening habits, revealing that he does not regularly listen to hip-hop, despite building a career in the genre.
During an interview with SA Hip Hop Mag, Kid X was asked which South African hip-hop artists he is currently listening to. His answer was blunt: very few.
“I’m not. Yeah no. I’m not. I don’t listen to hip-hop much; I’ll be very frank with you. I never have, actually,” he said. The rapper explained that his relationship with hip-hop has never been defined by constantly consuming the genre. While he does have a personal selection of artists he considers his go-to choices, he said R&B remains the dominant sound in his own listening rotation.
“I do have, like, my selection of these are my go-to people when I play, but I think the dominant music that I play for me would be R&B,” Kid X explained.
His preference for R&B also extends into his creative process. Rather than turning to fellow rappers when he needs inspiration for his own music, Kid X said he often listens to R&B to spark ideas for his rap writing.
“For me, that’s, even when I’m looking for inspiration to write a rap, I’ll listen to R&B rather than, you know, hip-hop,” he said.
The revelation offers a glimpse into the influences behind Kid X’s distinctive approach to hip-hop. While the genre has remained central to his career, the rapper’s creative palette appears to stretch well beyond rap, with R&B playing a particularly important role in shaping the music he enjoys and the ideas he brings into his own work.
For Kid X, inspiration does not necessarily have to come from the same genre he represents. Instead, it can come from simply pressing play on the music that naturally speaks to him.
