Double World Cup winner Steven Kitshoff has firmly rejected claims that the Springbok scrum walked around against the All Blacks.
New Zealand coach Dave Rennie accused the Boks of not scrumming straight during the opening two Tests of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry.
“I don’t think the Springboks were guilty of that. No, definitely not,” Kitshoff was quoted by Netwerk24 as saying during the launch of his autobiography, Kitsie: Memoir of a Bomb-Squad Bok, on Tuesday.
The former Bok prop pointed to the philosophy of Bok scrum coach Daan Human, saying South Africa’s set-piece approach is built around power rather than “tricks”.
“If you listened to Daan’s press conference, he said he only coaches one way, and that is to scrum straight. Walking around is a sin in Daan’s eyes,” he said.
“Walking around in scrums is a cardinal sin in Springbok rugby.”

Kitshoff said the Boks want to dominate opponents through their scrum, with the Greatest Rivalry series producing pushover tries, penalty tries and penalties from the set-piece.
“You want to put as much pressure as possible on your opponents through the scrum and get them on the back foot,” he said.
“I think the scene is now set for next year’s [World Cup] quarter-final.”
