Krige: Hanekom the ideal Bok loosie

Corné Krige is excited for Cameron Hanekom to make his Test debut on the November tour, highlighting that the youngster’s skills marry well with the Springbok style of play.

Hanekom on Sunday earned his first Bok call-up in the latest injury-enforced update to Rassie Erasmus’ 35-man squad to face Scotland, England, and Wales in the UK.

The 22-year-old loose forward has been drafted into the national team after two-time World Cup-winning playmaker Damian Willemse’s groin injury while playing for the DHL Stormers.

Hanekom’s no-nonsense presence at breakdowns and set pieces has drawn comparisons to the legendary Duane Vermeulen, and has showcased his dual threat as both a physical and attacking force across the back row for the Vodacom Bulls.

Under attack coach Tony Brown, the Boks are opting for a more expansive style while still relying on their traditional physicality. Speaking to Netwerk24, Krige believes Hanekom’s balance of physical dominance and flair aligns perfectly with this evolution.

“That’s Rassie. He is the only one who would choose a loose forward in a fullback’s place and I believe he will definitely want to give Cameron a chance on the tour,” the 39-Test former Bok skipper said.

“I am very excited about what he can offer the Springboks, especially with the great focus that is now on attacking rugby. He should fit in very well with that pattern of play.

“What I like about Cameron is that he is quick and has good hands, but is also a good defender and can play to the ground.

“Although he is not a specialist fetcher, he can steal balls for you. Cameron is also very physical and a dangerous ball-carrier. In that respect, he is the ideal loose forward in modern rugby.”
