While acknowledging the hard work and consistency of today’s artists, the rapper made it clear that something crucial is missing from the equation.

“The guys are working now, they are bringing out the music now, which is a beautiful thing. But there is also one problem, the hits,” L-Tido said. “We can’t be impactful without the hits, unfortunately. The albums are there, the albums are quality, people are dropping a good solid body of work, but the hits are not there.” He pointed out that only a few songs are currently dominating the conversation, singling out Nasty C’s Leftie and Yanga Chief’s What If? as standout records in a crowded release schedule.

L-Tido went on to contrast today’s landscape with an earlier era of SA hip hop, a time he believes was driven by an unstoppable run of chart-topping records. According to him, the culture once thrived on momentum, with new hits arriving almost weekly and dozens of impactful songs emerging over a single year. His comments were less about criticism and more about concern, highlighting how hit records help push the genre forward, grow audiences, and keep hip hop central in mainstream conversations.

As the scene continues to deliver quality albums and polished projects, L-Tido’s message serves as a reminder of the power of hit songs. For SA hip hop to regain its full force, he suggests, the industry needs both substance and smash records that can move the culture, dominate airwaves, and remind everyone just how powerful the genre can be.
