Griquas have welcomed back hooker Tiaan Lange from injury and a flyhalf from suspension for Friday’s Currie Cup clash against the Sharks XV in Kimberley.
Lange has recovered from the back niggle that forced his late withdrawal from last week’s match against the Lions and will make his return from the bench.
Janus Venter, who impressed on debut after joining Griquas on loan from the SWD Eagles, retains the No 2 jersey.
“Tiaan is an important player,” coach Pieter Bergh told OFM Sport. “Last week we took a big risk with Blokkie, Corné Lavagna, on the bench. He’s actually a loosehead; he’s not a hooker. So having Tiaan back this week is big for us.
“We just felt that we want to continue with that combination of Janus starting, as he did really well, and he’s got that momentum.”
TEAM: Sharks rest and rotate for Griquas
Griquas have also named Liam Koen on the bench, putting the 22-year-old flyhalf in line for his Currie Cup debut after serving a red-card suspension from the Toyota Challenge.
“We had big plans for Liam during that Toyota Challenge – he really started to play well in that competition, and then obviously got that suspension, which put the plans we had for him a bit on the back foot.”
Flank Marco de Witt also returns after picking up an injury against the Bulls XV.
GRIQUAS – 15 Stefan Coetzee, 14 Dylan Maart, 13 Zane Bester, 12 Mnombo Zwelendaba, 11 Gurswin Wehr, 10 George Whitehead, 9 Bobby Alexander, 8 Carl Els, 7 Marco de Witt, 6 Carel van der Merwe, 5 Albert Liebenberg (c), 4 Malembe Mpofu, 3 Ig Prinsloo, 2 Janus Venter, 1 Leon Lyons.
Bench: 16 Tiaan Lange, 17 Eddie Davids, 18 Ntobeko Shezi, 19 Derik Pretorius, 20 Dillon Smith, 21 Jack Hart, 22 Liam Koen, 23 Saki Makata.
