Japanese club Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath have confirmed the acquisition of a decorated Ireland international to fill the gap left by Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe’s exit.
Two-time World Cup winner Kolbe will make a sensational return to Cape Town next season, after signing a deal to pull on the Stormers jersey once again through to 2029.
Ireland winger James Lowe has signed a two-year deal with the Japan Rugby League One outfit after bringing his successful spell with Leinster to an end.
The New Zealand-born 34-year-old won Six Nations titles with Ireland in 2023 and 2024, lifted the Investec Champions Cup with Leinster in 2018 and helped the Irish province claim last season’s Vodacom URC crown before opting for a move to Japan.
Lowe, who earned 45 Test caps for Ireland and made 102 appearances for Leinster, said he was relishing the opportunity to begin a new chapter with his family.

“To everyone in the Suntory Sungoliath family, my family and I are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Japan. I have some very special memories from playing there,” he said in a club statement.
“I have always admired the passion for rugby, the respect shown both on and off the field, and the pride people take in representing their team. I am looking forward to learning more about Japan and its culture. It is a huge honour to join such a prestigious club.”
The move also ends Lowe’s hopes of featuring at next year’s World Cup in Australia, despite Ireland coach Andy Farrell previously leaving the door open for his selection.
