Lions loosie chasing Bok dream again

Renzo du Plessis believes a strong Currie Cup campaign can put him back on the Springboks’ radar as the Lions loose forward looks to force his way back into contention.

The 24-year-old was invited to a Springbok alignment camp in 2025 after an outstanding run of form, but found opportunities harder to come by during the recent Vodacom URC campaign as Batho Hlekani and Siba Mahashe emerged in the Lions’ back row.

Now, with the Lions opening their Currie Cup campaign against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Sunday, Du Plessis is determined to rediscover the form that first caught Rassie Erasmus’ eye.

“The opportunity to be part of that system was incredible,” he told Netwerk24.

“You’re surrounded by people who fill you with confidence and want to make sure you reach the next level.

“I remember experienced players like Siya Kolisi, Kwagga Smith and others taking me under their wing and helping me with certain things. They’re the kind of guys who want to lift you to a higher level with them rather than leave you to figure it out on your own.”

Du Plessis admitted his ambition is to earn another Springbok invitation.

“I can’t wait to get back there. My goal is to produce that level of rugby again and earn another invitation.”
