Nico Steyn’s former coach says he’s always had the ingredients to make it to rugby’s highest level.
Former Glenwood High School coach Derek Heiberg admitted that Steyn was not widely regarded as a future Springbok during his school days.
But he’s cited the Lions halfback’s relentless work ethic and determination to improve as key reasons for his rise through the Vodacom URC this season.
The 24-year-old was called up to the Springbok training camp in Johannesburg this week as preparations continue for next Saturday’s clash against the Barbarians in Gqeberha.
“To be honest, I don’t think many people would have said he could become a Springbok when he was at school,” Heiberg told Netwerk24.
“Nico is proof that if you believe in yourself, ignore negative comments, trust your abilities and work hard, anything is possible.
“I chatted to him on WhatsApp this week. It really is an incredible story that he has come this far.”
Steyn joins a competitive group of scrumhalves in the Bok camp that includes Grant Williams, Haashim Pead, Imad Khan and Faf de Klerk.

With Morné van den Berg, Cobus Reinach and Jaden Hendrikse currently sidelined through injury, the Lions playmaker has been handed an opportunity to impress.
Steyn also excelled in sevens rugby at school and represented the SA U18 Sevens side.
In 2020 he captained Glenwood’s 1st XV and served as head boy, although lockdown limited him to just one match during his matric year.
He later represented the Junior Springboks in 2021 and 2022 before continuing his rise through the professional ranks.
