Melinda Ferguson: “Anele Did Not End Her Own Life.” Five years after 22-year-old Anele Tembe fell to her death from the 10th floor of Cape Town’s Pepper Club Hotel, her family and those who have followed her story with heavy hearts are finally seeing a glimmer of justice on the horizon.

The Cape Town Magistrate’s Court has confirmed that the long-awaited inquest into her death will begin in July 2026 and is expected to run for three days, with up to 23 witnesses set to testify.

Anele, a qualified chef, businesswoman, and the fiancée of late rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes at the time, died on 11 April 2021 after plunging from the hotel balcony. Her naked body reportedly lay bleeding on the street below, and she passed away approximately 20 minutes later. The circumstances surrounding her fall have remained shrouded in controversy, pain, and unanswered questions ever since.

In a recent Facebook post, author and journalist Melinda Ferguson reflected on the anniversary of Anele’s death, recalling that she had posted a photo of Anele alongside her father, businessman Moses Tembe, in remembrance. The backlash she received was so intense that she was forced to restrict the post’s visibility to herself only.

“A couple of days ago, on the day that 22-year-old Anele Tembe ‘fell’ to her death… I posted a pic of her and her father Moses in remembrance of her tragic and still unresolved death,” Ferguson wrote. “The amount of abuse I got from the other side made me change the privacy settings… Now there is some hope on the horizon with the inquest… set to start in July.”

Ferguson’s words cut deep: “Anele’s naked body lay bleeding on a street in Cape Town before she died 20 minutes after she ‘fell’. Imagine that she was your own child or sister. Hopefully we will soon learn how Anele did not end her own life. Rest in peace both of you.”

The accompanying newspaper clipping from the Daily News (13 April 2026) carries the headline “Justice looms for Anele Tembe” and features a photograph of Anele and her late partner AKA. The article details the family’s long wait for closure, noting that no one has yet been charged in connection with her death, and highlights the Tembe family’s hope that the inquest will provide honesty and answers.

Public speculation about the nature of Anele’s death has persisted, with some close to the investigation and the family expressing doubts that she took her own life. Ferguson, who has written extensively on the couple’s relationship in her book When Love Kills, has long suggested that the tragedy stemmed from a situation that spiralled out of control rather than a deliberate suicide.

The upcoming inquest marks a critical step. According to recent reports, the findings could determine whether the matter proceeds further, potentially leading to charges. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has previously referred the case back for deeper investigation, and former Police Minister Bheki Cele once publicly indicated that police believed Anele may have been murdered.

For Moses Tembe and the rest of Anele’s family, this inquest represents more than legal procedure — it is a chance to honour a young woman whose life was cut short and whose final moments demand truth. As Ferguson urged her readers, picture Anele as your own daughter or sister. The pain of not knowing has lingered far too long.
