Paarl Caracals director of rugby Monty Dumond hopes SA Rugby will back the breakaway Mzansi Rugby League.
The former Sharks flyhalf has been appointed to lead one of 10 teams set to compete in the new professional competition from March next year.
“When I heard there were going to be more opportunities for guys to play professionally, I was immediately interested,” Dumond told Rapport.
“A lot of players in this country don’t get contracts with unions and then simply stop playing rugby.
“Every year I see talented players who don’t get an opportunity anywhere because we have such a large pool of players. That was the biggest attraction for me – seeing those players get opportunities.”
The MRL has been announcing player signings on social media since September, with monthly salaries now expected to range from R10,000 to R25,000, down from the originally proposed R15,000 to R30,000.
However, the league faces opposition from SA Rugby, which has threatened to ban participating players from its competitions and national teams.
Dumond hopes the governing body will reconsider its stance.
“You would like SA Rugby to back you and see the value in a league like this, because there is a lot of value in it for SA Rugby too.
“Think of the smaller unions – they are going to have injuries here and there, and then they could borrow a player from Mzansi.
“I hope SA Rugby will start supporting the MRL at some stage, because we are not against SA Rugby.”
The Mzansi Rugby League is proud to announce Zimbabwe international scrumhalf Keegan Joubert as our fourth player signing.
Keegan’s signing represents another important step in what we are building. The MRL is based in South Africa, but its vision is African. https://t.co/hUYkLydWzC
