South African hip-hop star Nadia Nakai has opened up about the biggest financial check of her career, revealing how securing a major global deal allowed her to achieve a significant personal milestone: buying her home.
Appearing on My Biggest Bag, the “Bragga” hitmaker took a nostalgic look back at her journey in the entertainment industry, reflecting on her early financial wins and how smart money management helped secure her future.
Nadia recalled her first major commercial breakthrough with alcohol brand Brutal Fruit. At the time, she was still balancing a corporate 9-to-5 job while grinding on her music career.
“My first biggest bag, I think was Brutal Fruit. That was the first biggest brand that I had worked with, and I was still working a 9-to-5 when I got that brand, funny enough,” Nadia shared. “While I was working my 9-to-5, I was still doing music. They hired me and a few other girls—I think it’s the first time I met Sarah Langa, actually. Lamiez was also part of that campaign, K Naomi… and that was my biggest first bag.”
However, when asked about the absolute largest paycheck of her career so far, the rapper pointed to her starring role on Netflix’s hit reality series, Young, Famous & African (Season 1). “I think my biggest bag had to be Netflix—the reality show, especially season one,” she revealed. “The coins were very nice there.”
Rather than spending her earnings on short-term luxuries, Nadia used the payday as a long-term investment by putting it toward purchasing her home. She credited her mother for instilling strong financial habits in her from an early age.
“My mom is a financial analyst, so I’ve always had that financial savviness of being able to save money and knowing what I need to do,” Nadia explained. “So that money, I put it towards a deposit and was able to purchase my house.”
