Coach Phiwe Nomlomo was left frustrated by another poor start as the Vodacom Bulls XV fell to their third consecutive defeat in the Currie Cup.
The Bulls went down 42-19 to the Lions at UJ Stadium on Saturday, with Nomlomo acknowledging his side kept making life difficult for themselves.
“We have to be better at how we start games,” he said. “We fire shots, we let teams in. The Lions start quickly and they want to put pressure on you with the scoreboard. We knew that. We were prepared for that.
“That try straight after half-time hurt us. We just felt we were always two scores away as we were building into the game.”

Despite the defeat, Nomlomo was proud of the second-half response.
“Hell of a proud with how we bounced back,” he said. “The fight was incredible.”
A growing injury toll has compounded the Bulls’ difficult start, with Nomlomo already losing 15 players across the first three rounds, including captain Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg on Saturday.
“It’s frustrating,” said Nomlomo. “However, we’re going to put our heads together and we’re going to have to bounce back.”

Despite the mounting challenges, Nomlomo remained defiant, pointing to the character shown by his players.
“There are a lot of guys who stayed on with niggles,” he said. “The guys who are left, we’re going to have to really roll up our sleeves and get on with it.”
The Bulls host the Pumas at Loftus in round four.
