PdotO Reveals How Tupac Inspired His Music And Acting Ambitions. PdotO has opened up about the international icons who shaped his artistry, revealing that American hip hop legends Tupac Shakur and Nas remain central to his creative foundation.

Speaking on the Under The Influence podcast hosted by SPeeKa as part of the Sotra Cyphers series, the East London-born lyricist Siphelele Mnyande reflected on the music that defined his formative years.
During the interview, PdotO was asked whether soul music influenced his sound while growing up. He acknowledged that neo soul played a role in his early listening habits, but made it clear that the artists who truly moulded his direction were Tupac and Nas.
“Out of listening to neo soul music, it was my biggest influencers,” he explained. “I would say it was Tupac and Nas. Even today, I get huge inspiration from them.”
Drawing a vivid comparison from football, PdotO illustrated the difference between style and substance in hip hop. He likened The Notorious B.I.G. to a flashy, showboating player whose music dazzles and captivates listeners.
“He makes you want to listen to the music,” PdotO said. “But when you leave, you don’t really leave with anything.”
In contrast, he described Tupac as the impactful player whose presence transforms the game and leaves a lasting impression long after the final whistle.
“I always wanted my music to have that,” PdotO continued. “When I leave, I want to feel the impact, and Tupac was able to do that. That was my biggest inspiration by far.”
The influence extended beyond music. PdotO revealed that Tupac’s success in both music and film inspired him to formally study drama.
“Even more to the acting thing,” he shared. “I went to the school of acting because of Tupac. I went to study drama because of Tupac.”
He praised Tupac as a rare creative force who excelled at the highest level in two demanding industries. For PdotO, Tupac demonstrated that it is possible to merge musical excellence with powerful on-screen performance, a balance few artists achieve.
Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most respected lyricists, PdotO has built his career on introspective storytelling and socially conscious themes. His reflections highlight how Tupac’s legacy continues to resonate nearly three decades after his death, influencing artists far beyond American borders and deep into the South African hip hop landscape.
