Pead being pushed towards Lions exit?

Haashim Pead’s future could reportedly be shaped by Rassie Erasmus’ plans to send Springbok scrumhalf Morné van den Berg back to the Lions to face the All Blacks.

According to Rapport, Van den Berg is expected to be released to the Pride for Tuesday’s Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry clash at Ellis Park, along with Quan Horn and Boan Venter.

That leaves the talented Pead fighting for a spot alongside Van den Berg and Nico Steyn, with the prospect of missing out entirely.

Contracted to the Lions until 2028, Pead’s limited game time in Joburg has raised eyebrows, and Rapport suggests it wouldn’t be a surprise if he eventually requests an early release.

The 21-year-old featured for the South Africa A side against Zimbabwe on 20 June.

Lions head coach Ivan van Rooyen is expected to confirm his match 23 on Sunday.
