The Spaniard, who arrived at City in 2016, announced that Sunday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa will be his final game in charge despite still having one year left on his contract. Pep Guardiola described the decision as the “right time” for him to step away after a decade of outstanding success at the club.
During his time at Manchester City, Guardiola transformed the club into one of the most dominant sides in world football. He won 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, multiple FA Cups, and League Cups.
One of the outstanding seasons for Guardiola was his 2017/18 side, which also became the first team in Premier League history to reach 100 points in a single season.
Manchester City have already confirmed plans to honour Guardiola’s legacy, including renaming the North Stand at the Etihad Stadium after him and commissioning a statue outside the stadium.
What did Pep Guardiola say about his exit from Manchester City?
“Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my tim. Bothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City. We’re worked. We suffered. We fought. And we did things our own way. Our way. So as my time comes to an end, be happy. Oasis are back again. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for trusting me. Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for loving me.. Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time. Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City”.
Who will replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City?
Some reports suggest former assistant coach Enzo Maresca is the leading candidate to replace him. The Italian led the Blues to winning the Europa Conference League and the first edition of the expanded Club World Cup.
