Police launch investigation into Jesus de Miguel’s incident

It has been reported that the police have officially launched an investigation into the death of Jesus de Miguel following his shocking incident.

Spanish police have opened an investigation into the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel following a collision incident with an opposing goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match.

The 30-year-old striker died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest during Tenerife’s fixture against FC Andorra on Monday.

The incident happened in stoppage time when FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono rushed out of his penalty area to clear the ball but collided with De Miguel, striking him in the chest.

Medical personnel immediately attended to the forward on the pitch before he was transported to hospital. The match was subsequently abandoned, while Owono received a red card for the challenge.

Tenerife initially provided a positive update, describing De Miguel’s condition as stable despite the seriousness of his injuries. However, the club later announced that his neurological condition had worsened before confirming his death in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to reports by The Independent, Spain’s National Police have initiated an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, with prosecutors expected to be involved in the proceedings.

However, authorities in the Canary Islands have explained that such investigations are standard procedure under Spanish law whenever a death is classified as non-natural. The development does not necessarily indicate that anyone has been charged or that wrongdoing has been established.

Following the tragedy, Tenerife released an emotional statement expressing its grief over the loss of the forward.

The club described itself as heartbroken and struggling to accept the news, adding that no words could adequately express the sadness surrounding De Miguel’s passing.

Owono, an Equatorial Guinea international, has deactivated his Instagram account following the incident.

FC Andorra also released a condolence message, extending its sympathies to De Miguel’s family, teammates and everyone associated with Tenerife.

Several prominent football clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool, have also paid tribute to the late striker.

The world players’ union, FIFPRO, expressed its sadness over his death, while La Liga president Javier Tebas described himself as shocked by the tragedy and pledged the league’s support for Tenerife and De Miguel’s family.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under scrutiny as Spanish authorities examine the circumstances of the forward’s death.
