Priddy Ugly stated, bridging the connection between his Angolan birthplace and South African heritage. His father, a Sesotho and Setswana man from Soweto with ancestral ties to the Free State and North West provinces, is at the centre of this remarkable story.
“I see that it’s shocked more people than I thought it would that I was born in Luanda, Angola – but my surname ke Moloi. My father is South African, Sesotho/Setswana. He’s from Soweto, with roots in the Free State & North West,” said Priddy Ugly.
Priddy Ugly recounted his father’s courageous journey as a young revolutionary who fled into exile for approximately 15 years. With a deep-seated disdain for injustice, his father dedicated his life to fighting for liberation, undergoing extensive military training across various countries and serving in the army while stationed in Angola. During this pivotal chapter, he met Priddy Ugly’s mother, a Portuguese-speaking woman. Their love transcended borders and hardships, leading to Priddy Ugly’s birth in Angola.
“He has always had a revolutionary mindset, hates injustice & is very vocal & proactive about standing up for our people. He went into exile as a teenager, for about 15 years. He received military training throughout the world & worked in the army while being stationed in Angola at the time. He met my mother there, a Portuguese speaking woman & years later I was born,” he added.
When the political landscape allowed, the family relocated to South Africa, ending years of separation from extended family members who had feared they might never see or hear from his father again. Settling in Soweto’s Meadowlands, Priddy Ugly spent his formative years immersed in a community rich with resilience and culture.
We relocated to South Africa once it was safe to after my father’s family hadn’t seen or heard from him in years. Soweto, Meadowlands is where I spent the foundation years of my life. The rest is in the music, bless. “We relocated to South Africa once it was safe to after my father’s family hadn’t seen or heard from him in years.
