Rassie picks up special paw-trait

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus recently visited a Durbanville artist’s home studio to collect a portrait of his beloved dog, Kwedini.

Local artist Craig Stuart said the idea for the painting came after a brief meeting with Erasmus earlier this year.

Stuart introduced himself to the Bok coach while also introducing Erasmus to his two daughters.

Afterwards, Stuart noticed Erasmus frequently sharing moments with Kwedini on social media and decided to paint the dog.

“Without any commission or arrangement in place, I decided to create a portrait of Kwedini as a gift,” Stuart explained in an email to SARugbymag.co.za.

After Stuart shared parts of the painting process online, word eventually reached Erasmus, who then arranged to collect the artwork himself.

Last week, the Bok coach visited Stuart’s home studio – which the artist jokingly described as “the garage” – to receive the portrait.

“For me, this wasn’t about celebrity,” Stuart said. “It was about creating something personal from a small interaction and seeing where it led.”

Stuart’s work is rooted in storytelling – creating original pieces that honour the people, pets and memories that matter most.
