Reds lure back Wallabies star

The Reds have secured a major boost after confirming the signing of a Wallabies bruiser on a two-year deal from 2029.

Tom Hooper will link up with the Reds once his contract with English club the Exeter comes to an end, with Rugby Australia announcing the long-term agreement on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old has already earned 23 Test caps and enjoyed an outstanding season with Exeter, where he was named in the Premiership Team of the Season after helping them reach the final.

The former Brumbies loose forward said he is excited to have his future settled, while remaining focused on his current commitments in England and with the Wallabies.

“I’m really happy to have my long-term future secured with a move back to Australia in the not-too-distant future,” Hooper said.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying my time in Exeter and am focused on continuing to improve my game there before returning to Australia and linking up with Queensland.

“In the short term, my priority is to continue working hard with the Wallabies where I’m incredibly hungry to contribute on and off the field as we continue to build our game as a group.”

Hooper will not feature again in the Wallabies’ current campaign after suffering a shoulder injury during Australia’s 33-31 defeat to Ireland in Sydney.

Queensland boss Sam Cordingley believes the signing will strengthen their long-term plans and help attract other leading players to the club.

“While it will be a few years before we see him in a Reds jersey, he’s another world-class player we can build our squad around,” said Cordingley.

“In planning for the future, we’re confident Tom’s decision to join the Reds will be a catalyst for retaining and recruiting players over the next few years.”
