Vusi Moyo is excited to line up alongside two-time World Cup winners in his first Test start, with Cobus Reinach backing the Springbok flyhalf to handle the step up with ease.
Erasmus named Moyo among four debutants for Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Wales at Kings Park.
The 20-year-old’s rise has been rapid, from helping the Junior Boks win the Junior World Championship last year to making his Sharks debut just weeks before his maiden Bok call-up.
Speaking to the media in Durban on Tuesday, Moyo admitted his heart “skipped a beat” when Erasmus told him the news of his selection.
RASSIE: Vusi a big boy with soft hands
“It’s very special to be around these guys who have won the World Cup twice. My first memory of Cobus is him scoring three tries against Canada in the 2019 World Cup,” Moyo told reporters.
“It’s every kid’s dream to be a part of the Springbok set-up. When Coach Rassie named the squad on Monday, my heart skipped a beat. I’m just out here to make my family and the people that support me proud.
“My sister’s playing her first hockey tournament so my mom has decided to go and watch my sister play! She sent me a message telling me that she’ll be there in spirit!
“I played one game for the Sharks, I was injured for the first five months of the year. It was very special to get my first cap for the Sharks and then straight after that a few weeks later, I got named in the Springbok squad.”
On the pressure that comes with wearing the No 10 jersey for the Boks, Moyo added: “I think the only thing about this set-up, it’s much quicker. At the end of the day, rugby is rugby so I’m very excited.”
DAVIDS: Ruben deserves his opportunity
Moyo was also quick to shift focus away from himself: “You’ve got Ruben van Heerden, Carlü Sadie and Jaco Williams who are all making their debuts. It’s about us just implementing what the coaches have taught us this weekend.”
Reinach, who will make his first outing of the 2026 Test season after a knee injury, expects big things from his halfback partner.
“If you’ve trained with him for the last few weeks, you’ll know you don’t have to look after him, he can look after himself.
“He might be a young man, but he knows the game very well.
“I’m on his inside, Doogz [Damian de Allende] is on his outside, so there’s nothing to worry about. Rugby’s not an individual sport, it’s 23 players who’ve all got each other’s back.”
