Rowlene Breaks Down In Tears As She Reveals Eight-Month Fight Over Unpaid Gig. South African singer-songwriter Rowlene has emotionally opened up about an ongoing payment dispute, revealing that she has allegedly not been paid for a performance she completed in October last year.
In a tearful video shared on Instagram, the artist appeared visibly distressed as she detailed months of frustration, saying she had exhausted her options in trying to recover money owed to her.
“If you knew me, you would know that I don’t usually do this, but I’m out of options,” Rowlene said through tears. “I’m at a position where I’m starting to question if my business model is all messed up, or if people just generally don’t grasp how their indecency affects other people.”
(@rowlene_sa)According to the singer, she performed at an event in October but has yet to receive payment for her work. She explained that she had even attempted to negotiate a reduced amount and proposed a payment plan in an effort to resolve the matter amicably.
“I tried to work out a payment plan. I even said they don’t have to pay me the full amount because I know I didn’t sell all the tickets,” she said. “It just feels so disrespectful.”
Rowlene expressed concern about the financial burden the dispute has placed on her, noting that she is now having to spend additional money on legal assistance to recover earnings she believes she is entitled to.
“My lawyer is handling it, but now it’s money that I don’t have that I’m going to have to use to get back money that I worked hard for,” she said. “Please tell me what I’m supposed to do.”
The artist also reflected on the emotional toll the situation has taken on her, saying she has spent years building her career while navigating personal and professional challenges.
In the caption accompanying the video, Rowlene shared her disappointment and frustration, writing that despite a decade in the music industry and her commitment to her craft, she feels as though she has failed herself over circumstances beyond her control.
“As someone who wakes up at 5 am in the morning to make sure I’ve checked all the boxes, as someone who’s done this for 10 years, I still feel like I failed myself over something that’s beyond my control,” she wrote.
The singer added that the experience had made her think about the difficulties faced by emerging artists who may have fewer resources and industry connections.
“If this is happening to me, I can only imagine smaller artists trying to navigate this industry,” she wrote. “My heart is just broken.”
Rowlene further revealed that she had spent the past eight months seeking payment before deciding to speak publicly about the matter.
“Unfortunately, even after begging for eight months, yeah, I don’t know,” she wrote.
Despite the ordeal, the musician emphasised her desire to continue focusing on her music.
“Still trying to make music, guys,” she said in the video. “I just wanna sing and feed my cat, but life’s just making it so impossible.”
At the time of publication, Rowlene had not publicly identified the event organiser or the company involved in the alleged payment dispute.
