The PNG Chiefs hope to lure an experienced All Black to the newly established rugby league club for their debut NRL season in 2028.
According to Stuff, the Papua New Guinea-based outfit has approached Damian McKenzie’s management about a potential switch from rugby union following the 2027 World Cup.
The 31-year-old flyhalf/fullback is contracted to NZ Rugby and the Hamilton-based Chiefs until the end of 2029.
However, his four-year deal includes a sabbatical clause allowing him to play overseas in 2028 before returning to New Zealand ahead of the British & Irish Lions tour in 2029.

The approach comes amid a legal dispute between NZ Rugby and the NRL over the new club’s name.
NZ Rugby has taken legal action, arguing that the PNG Chiefs name infringes the trademark of the Super Rugby club and could confuse supporters.
However, New Zealand’s High Court recently rejected NZ Rugby’s application for an interim injunction, allowing the PNG club to proceed with its official branding launch.
