SA U18 A secured a nail-biting victory over Ireland in the first match of the U18 International Series at Hoërskool Durbanville on Friday.
Replacement flyhalf Travis Pheiffer’s late penalty goal gave the hosts a 32-31 victory.
SA U18 A led 17-7 at the break after scoring two converted tries as well as penalty goal, while the Irish responded with a converted try.
The South Africans increased their lead after the break, but Ireland hit back with three tries, hooker Herbie Doyle earning a brace.
Ireland led 29-28 late in the game, but failed to keep SA U18 A at bay.
Despite failing with a long-range attempt, replacement Pheiffer slotted the match-winning penalty goal minutes later.
Next up for SA U18 A is Georgia U18 on Tuesday at Boland Landbou on the outskirts of Wellington.
