‘Sacha is Rassie’s next best 10’

Former Springbok flyhalf Jaco van der Westhuyzen believes Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is poised to become the world champions’ first-choice playmaker.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu made his Bok debut on Saturday as Rassie Erasmus’s troops convincingly beat Wales in their opening Test of the season at Twickenham.

Coming off the bench, the 21–year-old impressed immediately by kicking a penalty from over 50m, and added two conversions for a perfect display from the kicking tee.

Jordan Hendrikse, who started on debut at flyhalf, also kicked seven points but speaking to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Van der Westhuyzen foresees Feinberg-Mngomezulu as the heir to two-time World Cup-winning pivot Handre Pollard’s throne.

“Jordan Hendrikse can feel extremely satisfied himself and has justified Rassie’s trust in him,” the 32-Test Van der Westhuyzen told Rapport.

“It is difficult to make your Test debut at flyhalf, but after he missed his first penalty, Hendrikse did well to finally be in the spot with three out of four attempts.

“However, if I had to bet my money on [who will] take over from Manie [Libbok] or Handre [Pollard] if they are not available, I would choose Sacha in a heartbeat. He is our next 10 as far as I’m concerned.”

Led by Pieter-Steph du Toit, the Boks blooded four debutants against the Welsh. Edwill van der Merwe was instrumental, scoring one of South Africa’s five tries. Other notable performances included fullback Aphelele Fassi.

“Now is the ideal time to exploit new talent. Take for example Edwill van der Merwe; that try of his was brilliant,” Van der Westhuyzen said.

“Your wings are there to score tries, but it is also important that they do the rest of their job thoroughly and without making mistakes. Edwill did that, and that’s why he was named Player of the Match.

“Aphelele Fassi also deserves a thumbs up for his fearless play under the high ball.”
