Saffas Abroad: Bok hopefuls clash in final

Juarno Augustus helped Northampton Saints progress to the Premiership final, where they will face off with Bath on Saturday.

Premiership
– Bath set up a final against Northampton Saints after a tense 31-23 win against Sale Sharks in the semi-finals. Johann van Graan‘s team will face Northampton in their first Premiership final for nine years despite a stirring fightback from Sale. Springbok prop Thomas du Toit, lock Quinn Roux, loosehead prop Juan Schoeman and scrumhalf Louis Schreuder all played for Bath. Former Stormers locks Cobus Wiese and Ernst van Rhyn packed down with No 8 Jean-Luc du Preez for Sale, who had Robert du Preez at centre.

– Burger Odendaal scored a try to help league leaders Northampton Saints beat Saracens 22-20. The former Bulls and Lions centre opened the scoring for Northampton when he crossed the tryline in the 20th minute. Juarno Augustus played 77 minutes at No 8 for Northampton. Scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl started for Saracens.

Top 14
– Stade Francais will have to wait until the final round of Top 14 games to secure an automatic semi-final berth after falling to a 27-18 loss at Castres. The defeat saw second-placed Stade’s lead cut down to just three points, with Toulon trailing narrowly behind in third place. Lock JJ van der Mescht, scrumhalf Rory Kockott and centre Jeremy Ward started for Stade.

– Racing 92 bounced back from three consecutive defeats with a 24-15 win over Pau in Auxerre. Siya Kolisi and Trevor Nyakane started for Racing, who climbed to the sixth and final playoff place with one more round to play.

– Bordeaux’s hopes of an automatic semi-final place ended in a 37-30 loss to playoff-chasing Perpignan. Tighthead prop Carlu Sadie and winger Madosh Tambwe were in action for Bordeaux, who finished the round in fourth place, eight points behind Stade Francais. Lock Marvin Orie played off the bench for Perpignan.

– Jan Serfontein scored a hat-trick to help Montpellier demolish fellow strugglers Lyon 41-26. Loose forward Nico Janse van Rensburg and scrumhalf Cobus Reinach started for Montpellier, who will play the relegation playoff at the end of the season. Munster-bound fullback Thaakir Abrahams scored a try for Lyon, who could still climb to ninth place in the final round.

– Toulon kept their hopes of a second-place finish alive by thrashing Clermont 52-10. England-capped lock David Ribbans and Scotland-capped flank Cornell du Preez both started for Toulon.

– League leaders Toulouse were held to an entertaining 31-31 draw by La Rochelle. Dillyn Leyds started for fifth-placed La Rochelle.
