Scotland star in awe of Pieter-Steph

Scotland loose forward Rory Darge is bracing for another herculean performance from Springbok captain Pieter-Steph du Toit at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The visitors arrive in Pretoria fresh from a convincing victory over Argentina in Córdoba, but Darge knows they face a far sterner examination against the world champions.

“They’re a physical side,” Darge said. “They’ve got a very strong set-piece and they use it well and they’re great athletes.

“It’s definitely one of the toughest challenges going against South Africa at Loftus.”

Darge described double World Cup winner Du Toit as one of the game’s best.

“He’s right up there, particularly in the big games,” Darge said. “In the [2023] World Cup, his performance in the semis [against England] is one of the performances everyone looks at and can see what a great player he is.”

Despite acknowledging the scale of the challenge, Darge believes Scotland have grown significantly since their disappointing end-of-year campaign and are drawing positives from their victories over France and England in this year’s Six Nations.

“I think the thing that keeps us grounded is that we’ve had that growth since the autumn,” he said.

“That disappointment keeps you grounded among these games and makes you deliver your best performances, and this is a continuation of that growth.

“Obviously we want to put out our best performance to get a result.”
