Scumie Explains Why She Went Heavy With 20-Track Double-Disc Album “AVANT: TIRAMISU” South African alternative hip-hop artist Scumie has opened up about the deeply personal process behind her ambitious new double album, AVANT: TIRAMISU, revealing that isolation, self-examination and an overwhelming need to create pushed her to release the project when she did.

Speaking to DJ Speedsta and ShabZi Madallion on 5FM’s 5 Hip Hop Nights this week, Scumie unpacked the thinking behind the 20-track project, which arrived on 14 August 2026, just one day before her 21st birthday.

The album’s size immediately caught the attention of ShabZi Madallion, who questioned why the young artist had chosen to deliver such a substantial body of work so early in her career.

“The album, 20 tracks and 21, it’s a double disc. Damn. Why so soon? Why so soon? Yeah, why go that heavy so soon?” he asked.

Rather than viewing the project as a strategic career move, Scumie described it as something she felt compelled to make.

“Because I had no choice in the sense that when you isolate yourself, you have to understand what you are as an artist,” she explained.

For Scumie, the months leading up to the album became an intense period of creative isolation. From January through June, she spent long stretches working alone in her bedroom studio, using the solitude to interrogate her relationship with music and her reasons for making it.

She found herself asking whether she was creating because she genuinely loved the craft or because she wanted the attention that could come with it.

That process, she said, “really forced me to alchemise.”

The result was AVANT: TIRAMISU, a project built around two distinct creative worlds.

The first disc, AVANT, embraces Scumie’s more abrasive, experimental and unpredictable side, with tracks including “burberry,” “canned Milk,” “feel good,” “btch,” “locally hated,” “no adlibs,” “cocomelon,” “truck,” “garham’s Interlude” and “duma,” featuring Shia Choo.

TIRAMISU, meanwhile, provides a warmer and more soulful contrast through songs such as “oh dear,” “manifestation break,” “head right,” “emlotheni,” “don’t call,” “young ho,” “where?,” “am i ready? (freestyle),” “all along” and “hermothy outerlude.”

At the heart of the project, however, is Scumie’s desire to connect with listeners without compromising her authenticity.

She pointed to “Pray to Myself,” also known as “Prayer 2 Myself,” as an example of the approach she took while creating.

“That song was very raw. I didn’t make it with attention in mind. I didn’t make it in mind whether it’ll trend or not. I just did it because this is how I feel. And whoever can hear me out, they will.”

That philosophy ultimately spilt into the album itself. With so much emotion building during her isolated creative period, Scumie said she felt compelled to get the music out rather than leave it sitting in her vault.

“With this album, I have so much emotion in me. And I think it was so easy for me to just make so much music, where I was like, I can’t let everything simmer and marinate in the vault.”

For an artist approaching 21, AVANT: TIRAMISU arrives as a striking snapshot of creative urgency and self-discovery.

Rather than waiting for the perfect moment or shaping the music around what might trend, Scumie chose to follow the work wherever it took her. The result is a sprawling double album that reflects the tension between experimentation and vulnerability, confidence and uncertainty.

Her conversation on 5FM offered a glimpse into the person behind the music and the solitude that helped bring the project to life. For Scumie, AVANT: TIRAMISU was not simply about making a statement. It was about confronting herself, trusting her instincts and refusing to leave the music inside her unheard.
