Seabelo Senatla is keeping the flick-flack in his back pocket as the Stormers speedster’s try-scoring form gathers steam.
Senatla’s Man of the Match performance in the Investec Champions Cup on Saturday followed his Breyton Paulse-esque celebration after scoring against the Sharks two weeks ago.
He has started all four of the Stormers matches so far and scored in back-to-back victories at Cape Town Stadium.
Fronting the media ahead of this Saturday’s clash against the Scarlets in Cape Town, the 2021-22 URC winner touched on his acrobatics and nose for the tryline.
ICYMI: Stormers take precautions on key player
“I read a few things that Breyton said [about the flick-flack],” he said. “We had a conversation at the jersey launch, because I was hitting the front ones right and I was not landing the back ones.
“He was like, ‘But I should land those.’ And I was, ‘that’s not the point, Breytie, I’m actually going on momentum.’
“So I think he got a moerse skrik [big fright] when I did the backflip. He probably didn’t know I could do that.
“The guys in the team were just as surprised They were like, ‘Bro, what is that? Can you do that?’ I’m like, ‘You don’t know the real me.’
“But we had to honour the Men in Black that came before us. That was the gesture.”
STATE OF THE URC: Lethal SA trio reload, Lions reboot
The 33-year-old, though, does not want to dilute the moment by performing the flip all the time.
“Firstly, my knees locked because of old age, so I reckon maybe not! I don’t think I’ll do a flick-flack again unless it’s a special occasion, maybe if I score a hat-trick …”
Senatla showed his pace to break through and score against the Bristol Bears last week, before his offload put fellow winger Leolin Zas over the whitewash.
“As a club, we’ve always played a certain way. Now we have a great distinction between being set-piece dominant and then releasing our backs, who are quite explosive.
“It’s a bit more complex than what most people think but it’s great to get the ball in hand, which is huge for sure.”
PLUS: Patience pays off for big Vern, Paulie D
This season, Cheslin Kolbe has bolstered an experienced and exciting backline corps. Senatla said the Springbok star, like Siya Kolisi, will keep the squad sharp as well as connected to themselves and the fans.
“[Kolisi] has this innate ability to bring people together, and that’s our theme for this year. I think Chessie is a similar type of prospect to Siya.
“They’re both contributors and not just there to participate.”
A supersonic performance from the Fans’ Man of the Match Seabelo Senatla.
