ShabZi Madallion Reveals The Back to the City Festival Performance He Will Never Forget. For ShabZi Madallion, one of Back to the City’s most memorable moments was not just about performing in front of a packed crowd. It was about sharing the stage with a South African hip-hop pioneer and becoming part of a moment that connected generations of lyricists.
During a conversation with Rapty Mag, the Johannesburg-based rapper was asked which edition of the long-running hip-hop festival gave him the wildest experience. His answer took him straight back to the night Zubz invited him to perform “Heavy 8.”
“Where I performed with Zubz, and he brought me on to do Heavy 8. That was a crazy moment,” ShabZi recalled.
The moment unfolded in October 2024 when Zubz, also known as The Last Letta, celebrated the 20th anniversary of his influential debut album, Listener’s Digest, at Back to the City. Among the highlights was “Heavy 8,” a celebrated posse cut that brought multiple emcees together to deliver eight bars each.
For the special performance, Zubz opened the stage to a new generation of rappers, bringing ShabZi into the fold alongside established names such as Tumi, Reason, Amu, Ms Nthabi and Menzi.
What made the experience particularly significant was the opportunity for ShabZi to stand alongside artists whose contributions helped shape South African hip-hop. The invitation also came just days before the festival, turning a late call from the veteran rapper into an opportunity to be part of a historic celebration of the culture.
Rather than simply revisiting a classic, the performance gave “Heavy 8” a renewed sense of life, placing a younger voice among the emcees associated with its legacy. For ShabZi, it was a moment where the music’s history and its future converged on one stage.
Back to the City has built its reputation on bringing together different generations of hip-hop talent, but some moments leave a deeper impression than others. For ShabZi Madallion, being called up by Zubz to perform “Heavy 8” remains the standout experience, a reminder of how powerful it can be when a veteran artist makes room for the next generation.
